Old School Wisdom

“The difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightning and a lightning bug.”

What’s my story?

I am a writer, editor and communications strategist living in Charlotte, NC. I spend my days and many a caffeine-fueled night crafting messages for individuals, businesses and non-profits. When I’m not helping others with their writing needs, I write fiction and creative non-fiction. I know, all writers say that.
But it's true.

I am also someone’s wife, a mom and a well-meaning daughter, friend and volunteer. I try to find time to balance all of the above; when I can’t, I rely on my sense of humor to see me through.

2012 marks my first “official” year in business as Old School Communications, though I’ve been writing professionally for more than 15 years. If the name “Old School” implies that I sit around in a smoke-filled room, clickety-clacking out copy on an old Smith-Corona, then I have succeeded in sending the right message (except for the smoking part--smoking’s bad for you!). I believe that good writing never goes out of style, and that we have much to learn from those who got it right before us--Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Woolf, E.B. White…David Sedaris, Chelsea Handler.

The tools of my trade are an open mind, the right mix of wit, intellect and creativity, a laptop (I can’t exactly take a typewriter into a coffee shop, can I?) and a #2 pencil. While writing is my first love, I am experienced in all areas of marketing communications, including project management, brand naming and development, client and media relations, art direction and collateral production. I know how to communicate my vision, but I also know when to sit back and listen.
